Are you compliant?

Do your employees require health and safety training? 

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires you to provide whatever information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of your employees. 

As an employer you have a duty of care to ensure the health and safety of personnel within your premises, and the law comes down heavily on those companies who breach legislation and fail to comply with regulations.

Regardless of legislation, promoting and maintaining good health and safety policies in the workplace helps to recruit and retain the best staff, reduce sickness levels and improve productivity and profitability.

When considering health and safety training for your employees, you need to look at what training you require to be compliant with the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 you need to review the;

  • hazards and risks they may face, if any
  • measures in place to deal with those hazards and risks, if necessary
  • how to follow any emergency procedures

A proportionate approach is needed, for example a low-risk business would not need lengthy technical training. Providing simple information or instructions is likely to be sufficient. Training that would need to be implemented would be First Aid, Fire Warden/Marshall, Manual Handling, Fork Lift. Training to consider for competence would be IOSH Managing Safely, Manager/Supervisor Safety Awareness, Staff Workplace Safety Awareness and Risk Assessment.
