Witherbys celebrate 275 years

In 1740, Thomas Witherby started the family business, that today is represented by the six and seventh generation of Witherbys. Based in Birchin Lane off Lombard Street in Central London he had exceptional fine handwriting which soon brought him documents to be copied. Articles of agreement, leases, wills and marriage settlements were the main stay of the business produced by skilled staff using quill pens inscribing on the skins of stretched parchment.

275 years on, we see a modern, technology lead printer but still with the essence of a family business. The enthusiastic team contribute with their skills and expertise to develop the company business strategy- develop and maintain strong customer relationships.

In 2014, Gary Lineker visited Witherbys at their Tottenham Hale site. He was taking part in the TV programme "Who do you think you are" He wanted to know about one of his ancesters, Thomas Billingham, a calligrapher who worked at Witherbys at the turn of the nineteenth century. He was filmed viewing a document dated 1822 signed by Thomas. The document is now held at the London Metropolitan University, that now holds all of the companies archives, the oldest dated 1741.

To celebrate being in business and continually printing since 1740, the company chose St Bride’s Foundation to hold the celebration evening, on 2 July 2015. Clients, including one Livery company, who have been a customer since 1740, manufactures, trade partners and press who were given entertainment, canopies and gin from the local micro distiller in Bride Lane. During the evening their new brand was launched, encapsulating their unrivalled heritage and professionalism.

A wonderful celebration of 275 years and they are looking forward to the next 275.
