British passports should be made in Britain

British passports should be made in Britain

The decision made by government that the UK’s new blue passport will be made in France was announced last week. De La Rue, BPIF member and current printer of UK passports, is the UK’s leading security printer sustaining thousands of jobs in the UK.

BPIF Chief Executive Charles Jarrold comments “This is a disappointing and questionable decision from the government. When UK productivity is so clearly a government priority, and the UK is home to world class security printers, a decision which threatens both UK jobs and undermines a leading UK industry should be reconsidered. If the government is not prepared to reconsider its decision it should explain how this decision has been made, and given the lost opportunity to UK industry, why it reached this conclusion.”

Unite the union has teamed up with the GMB and the Daily Mirror newspaper to launch their campaign, which the BPIF fully support, calling for the production of UK passports to remain in the UK and for the Prime Minister to reverse this decision.

At the time of writing, 17,511 people had added their name in support of the ‘We demand the new blue UK passport is made in Britain to support UK jobs’ petition. We at the BPIF encourage you to do the same.
