BPIF Associate Prismm Environmental explain how new UK waste regulations could affect BPIF members
Prismm Environmental is the Facilities Management Operation that works with the BPIF to ensure its members receive the most suitable waste service to their business. They explain below how an amendment to the EU Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC could affect your business.
From January 1st 2015, new UK waste regulations will require all businesses to separate recyclable material (paper, plastic, metal and glass) from other waste. The Environment Agency states: 'This amendment to the Directive means that businesses will be required to separate their recyclable material by law'.
What does this mean for your business?
You should ensure Dry Recyclable Waste (paper, plastic, metal and glass) is collected separately from other waste, such as food and general rubbish.
European Commission guidance states: "considering that the aim of separate collection is high quality recycling, the introduction of a separate collection system is not necessary if the aim of high quality recycling can be achieved just as well with a form of co-mingled collection."
Will this increase or reduce your waste costs?
Potentially. Waste contractors offer various options for segregating your recyclable waste streams. However, these are dependent on their operational profile and may not always be the best solution for you.
How do I understand what the best option for my business is?
