The Centenary Charitable Trust Launch at Stephens & George Print Group

The Centenary Charitable Trust Launch at Stephens & George Print Group

As Stephens & George Print Group in Merthyr Tydfil celebrate 100 years of British Printing, we are proud to announce celebrations for the launch of the Stephens and George Centenary Charitable Trust that took place on Friday July 27th.

With celebrity compere Owen Money involved, as well as special appearances from the Dowlais Male Voice Choir, the event was a huge success raising in excess of £1000 from on-the-spot donations alone.

The Stephens & George Centenary Charitable Trust has been founded, not only to improve literacy levels of people in Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding Valleys area, but to promote literacy as a form of creative self expression; to improve the lives and futures of young people in the local community and to spread the joy and the power of the written word.

The Trust aims to generate an empowered, motivated community striving for a mutual goal; to allow all local people with the resources and opportunities to reach their potential.

The Trust has been working to develop libraries, book swaps and reading groups for people in the most disaffected areas of the local community. We have been training reading mentors who generously donate their time to read with children in local schools and much, much more.

Trustee Vanessa Jones at the launch stated, "I would just like to leave you with a dictionary term for Company. It derives from the term companion from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, when companions from all different walks of life travelled together on a pilgrimage, people from all different walks of life they shared a common purpose. Together we realise that the problems in the community can be resolved by the people of the community and we are striving to bring a sense of community back to Merthyr Tydfil."
