Skanem Liverpool achieves zero to landfill target

Skanem Liverpool achieves zero to landfill target

The Bromborough based Skanem site which is part of a leading producer of self adhesive labels with 13 other production facilities in 9 countries throughout Europe, Asia and Africa has achieved it's target of diverting all waste from landfill.

Skanem Liverpool has worked closely with recycling-led waste management company B&M Waste Services. B&M who offer a total waste management solution to businesses on a national scale commenced with an initial audit of the system, processes and waste streams they implemented various equipment to accommodate the waste being produced, as well as maximise efficiencies the aim was to reduce the impact on the environment by utilising the latest technologies to divert waste from landfill sites.

An on-site compactor, baler and various bins were installed to encourage segregation of the waste streams. Staff training on utilising the equipment from a health and safety as well as an environmental point of view was conducted this ensured not only correct usage, but obtained buy-in as to the benefits to the environment of recycling.

Segregation of almost 1,200 tonnes of materials made up of cardboard (1%), Adhesive LDPE (40%) and general waste (59%) in 2014, meant the possibility to send all items for recycling, resulting in 100% diversion from landfill.

The Adhesive LDPE is baled on-site, the cardboard is flattened and collected loose from the containers and the residual waste is collected in containers for recovery rather than landfill.

Operating nationally, B&M Waste Services opened their brand new Refuse Derived Waste processing facility in 2014, Skanem Liverpool further improved recycling levels as their residual waste (that cannot be recycled) is now processed and then sent to a combined heat and power plant where thermal energy is recovered.

Paul Brewer, one of the Production Managers at Skanem Liverpool says "Working with B&M Waste Services to achieve our target of zero waste to landfill has been a pleasure. They are constantly looking at ways to help us with our recycling. They even assisted with staff training to help us obtain buy-in to segregation and its importance in keeping recycles clean to achieve the highest levels of recycling. They are innovative and we as a company are so proud that we can now say 100% of our waste is diverted from landfill"

Rosemary Warnock, Corporate Contracts Manager at B&M Waste Services commented "The Skanem team had a goal they wanted to achieve in line with their sustainability policy and we have enjoyed working with the team to achieve this. As a Carbon Neutral business it is important to us that we accommodate our customer's needs. We have experience in the manufacturing sector and in working with complex plastics for recycling. Our total waste management approach means we offer more than waste collections, we work alongside our customers to understand their needs, identify their various waste streams and use innovative solutions to achieve an efficient and environmentally effective waste management service."

As the lead site in the Western European region for the Skanem group, Skanem Liverpool are taking our environmental responsibility even further, We can now ensure our customers that their label products are being produced with as little impact on the environment as possible. This work has also meant that over 800 tonnes of carbon was saved by Skanem Liverpool in 2014, This is the equivalent of planting 1,055 trees or reducing 5.36 million car miles. This information is demonstrated in the environmental reports that B&M Waste Services produce for the company on a monthly basis, which are independently verified by Carbon Footprint Ltd.
