RIDDOR extension rejected by Northern Ireland

RIDDOR extension rejected by Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland will not be following the rest of Great Britain in extending the threshold for reporting under the Reporting of Injuries and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) from over-three-day injuries to over-seven-day injuries.

Although the regulations have been revised twice (2012 & 2013) in Great Britain, the HSENI did not implement the changes due to the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Committee for Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) being concerned with employee protection.

The Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) carried out a public consultation on bringing its reporting requirements in line with Great Britain. From the consultation the HSENI decided with the agreement of the DETI that RIDDOR (Northern Ireland) 1997 would remain in force.

The HSEI are not proceeding with the proposed changes because of a clear lack of consensus in relation to the proposed changes and budgetary restraints in relation to their implementation.
