General Funding Rules

There must be a genuine job and this means

  • Apprentice must have a contract of employment which is long enough for them to complete the apprenticeship
  • You, the employer, must meet the cost of their wages (https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates)
  • The apprentice must have a job role that provides them the opportunity to the gain the knowledge, skills and behaviour needed to achieve their apprenticeship
  • The apprentice must be given support to carry out their job role
  • 100% of the apprenticeship must be completed during working hours


The apprentice must be eligible for funding

  • Have the right to work in UK
  • Spend at least 50% of their working hours in England
  • The apprentice must work for you, the employer


20% of the apprentice's time must be spent on off-the-job training. This must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship and could include the following:

  • Teaching of theory (workshops, seminars, simulation exercises, on-line learning or manufacturer training)
  • Observing colleagues, shadowing, mentoring & industry visits
  • Learning support and time spent researching and writing assignments/assessments
  • Coursework
  • Meeting with other apprentices
  • Visiting other departments
