Seven young printers awarded BPIF 2005 Educational Scholarships

Seven young people were presented with substantial cheques on June 30 when this year’s successful applicants for a BPIF Educational Scholarship were acknowledged at a short ceremony and buffet lunch at London’s Army & Navy Club in Pall Mall. The Scholarship Awards Scheme which is organised as a joint venture between the British Printing Industries Federation and the Printers’ Charitable Corporation is in its second year. The aim is to help young people achieve their aims for education and training in pursuit of a career in the UK printing and graphic arts industries. The full annual value of each Scholarship is £2500. This year’s winners come from very varied sectors of the UK printing industry. With ages ranging from 19 to 25 the judging panel have chosen an apprentice print finisher, two apprentice machine minders working on newspaper production, a digital print co-ordinator, a sales manager working in his father’s small print business, a university Phd student studying digital print and an LCC student studying Print Media Management. BPIF Deputy Chief Executive Cicely Brown, who was a member of the Scholarships Judging Panel comments: “ The calibre of candidates was both outstanding and inspiring. Their ambitions are high and there is no doubt that these Scholarships will enable these young people to make an even more impressive contribution to our industry in the medium term.” THE WINNERS DAVID DEWS (23) Sales Manager of his father’s six-employee, £500k turnover business Speed Design & Print Ltds, Peterborough. David, who has a BSc in Business & Maths from Aston University will use his award to fund sales promotion training via the Institute of Sales Promotion’s Diploma in Promotional Marketing. ROSS McGILL (20) An apprentice printer on the Glasgow Herald, studying at the Glasgow College of Building & Printing. Ross wishes to study for an HNC Printing and then a degree in order to build his skills for a future role in senior management. DANIEL BARLOW (19) A print finisher working in his family stationery printing business in Mansfield. Coming towards the end of his apprenticeship, Daniel has his sights on a BPIF approved print management course at Loughborough University starting this September. JENNIFER HAYMES (18) A student at the University of Hertfordshire studying for a BA in Graphic Design & Illustration, Jennifer is passionate about packaging and wants to build on her studies to fully develop her skills in packaging design. MICHELLE ORCHARD (24) works for the Joint Reprographic Service at Swindon which undertakes printing for the research community and for Universities. Michelle, a Digital Print Co-ordinator, plans to fund an EFI software course in America so that she can improve workflow efficiency in her organisation. JOHN TOPPON (22) is a Year 2 student on the BA Hons Print Media Management Programme at the LCC School of Printing & Publishing. He will use his award to fund a feasibility study to assess the possibility of starting a University Press for the University of the Arts (London Institute). John’s vision is a state of the art University Press run as a professional print business. JOEL TRINDER (25). A PhD student at the University of Swansea Joel is a member of the highly regarded team at the Welsh Centre for Printing & Coating. He already holds a first class honours BEng degree in Product Design & Manufacture. Currently conducting a study on digital printing systems he will use his award on further extensive studies including some major conferences abroad and the purchase of a laptop
