New look YMP welcomes Apprentices
At the YMP general meeting on 8 December, the organisation, aimed at fostering better management in the industry through helping people in print develop their leadership and management skills, voted in a number of new changes set to revolutionise the organisation from perceived social club to learning and development organisation. The YMP constitution was given a radical overhaul and amongst other changes, the lower age limit was dropped from 18 to 16 to allow apprentices to enjoy the benefits of membership. Head of BPIF Training, Ruth Exelby, also announced that all apprentices would automatically gain free membership to the YMP network. There is no upper age-limit to the organisation as this was dropped in 2001.The YMP will now come under the umbrella of BPIF Training, the commercial training department of the British Printing Industries Federation. A not for profit organisation run by volunteers from the printing, packaging and graphic communications industries for the benefit of people who work within those industries, the YMP will now place a greater emphasis on on-going training and life-long learning, as well as a continued emphasis on industry networking.?YMP will be run as a managed learning environment and will actively promote and encourage personal development amongst its members through visits to companies, networking and best practice sharing, training programmes, study tours, formal and informal gatherings,?Says Ruth Exelby, head of BPIF Training,?All BPIF trainees gain automatic membership of the YMP network and we hope to encourage as many of these as possible to actively participate.?To coincide with its constitutional and directional changes the YMP image was also given a makeover. The 5 year old skydiver logo has been replaced in favour of a new logo, designed by Standout Design and Marketing, emphasising the new, mature nature of the organisation. The old strapline ?management development for the printing and communications industries? has been changed to ?preparing people for the future of print.?Current Chairman of the YMP, Andrew Denny or Denny Bros Ltd said,?It?s important for us to emphasise that YMP is no longer just for managers, it?s for everyone. It?s an excellent training and networking ground for anyone in the print industry. Some of the industry?s leading figures are former YMP members.?YMP membership is open to anyone who works in printing or in a related industry, including suppliers. It is aimed at people with managerial or supervisory responsibilities, and at people aspiring to those roles. If your company is a member of the BPIF or you are an apprentice, you are eligible for full membership status. However, if your company is not yet a full or associate member of the BPIF you can join the YMP Organisation as an associate member. If you are studying full time at a recognised printing college you can join as a student member.

Performance in the UK's printing and printed packaging industry did improve in Q4, as far as output and orders are concerned. However, it didn't come close to what would historically be considered the seasonal norm, nor quite match the subdued expectations for Q4.
