Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations

Clean water – Backflow prevention

Members are reminded that all water supply connections must comply with the requirements of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 to prevent any risk of contamination to any public or private water supply by back siphonage and in many cases basic non-return valves previously fitted when installing plate and film processors are now not acceptable. Should a contamination take place as a result of the wrong fittings or procedures being in place member companies could be liable to the total cost of repairs to the water supply system.
Fire in the workplace - Alarming facts

Last year 643 people died and 18,170 were injured last year as a result of fire. Also over 70% of businesses involved in a major fire either do not reopen or subsequently fail within three years of fire. These statistics are made even more alarming by the fact that there are 128 fires in the workplace every day and 67% of all fires occur at times when buildings are closed

New duty to manage asbestos

Reforms to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 1998 are imminent (expected to be made in August or September this year) and duty holders will have to comply by Spring 2004. The new duty will apply to the employer in occupation of premises or the property's owner or managing agent, depending on the lease. The duty holder will have to identify asbestos containing materials in their premises, assess the materials' condition and prepare a written register and action plan.

Mobile phone ban for motorists

Janet Anderson MP for Rossendale and Darwen has tabled a bill, which will go before the House of Commons next month, calling for a ban on drivers using hand held phones while at the wheel. RoSPA, a leading road safety body, knows of at least 17 deaths on Britains road where mobile phones have been implicated. Do your staff use mobile phones whilst driving?
