Packaging Waste Seminar
BackgroundThe UK response to the European Packaging Directive became effective in 1998 and, after 5 years of operation, significant changes are about to come into effect.A prolonged and in-depth examination of the structure, administration, application, enforcement and cost of the Packaging Regulations has been under way since October 2002. Following this, a major consultation will take place this summer during which businesses will have an opportunity to analyse and comment on a multitude of proposed amendments. In December 2003 most of these proposals will pass into law or become definitive guidance covering the 5 year period to 2008. The topics examined include:- The PRN system- Material specific targets- Lowering of the turnover threshold- Online data capture- Prosecution of non-compliers (?free riders?)ContentOur presentation will look at all these issues and include a comprehensive guide to the regulations so those new to the process understand what they have to do to meet their obligations under these regulations. More importantly it will present a chance to discuss in open forum any issue of concern or confusion over how the Regulations work.Whether you are already an ?obligated producer? and currently in full compliance, a free rider, who should be in compliance, or a company still below the threshold, it is important that you become aware of the implication for you and your business of the changes that are afoot. One thing is undisputed- the cost of compliance will rise in the next 5 years as Britain strives to meet new environmental targets.TutorOur tutor for the seminar is Geoff Butterworth of Paperpak, the preferred compliance scheme for companies in the Printing and Paper Industries. It currently has 260 members and it is in the top 5 national schemes. Geoff, who was responsible at the start for establishing Paperpak on behalf of eight trade associations, last year became a member of the government?s Advisory Committee on Packaging reporting to the Minister, Michael Meacher. He has been active in the review process and is well placed to comment on the impact and future development of the Regulations.Dates and VenuesFriday 12 September 2003BPIF, North Western Business Centre8th Floor Trafford HouseChester RoadStretfordMANCHESTERM32 0RS9.30 for 10amWednesday 17 September 2003BPIF South Western Business CentreLindsey HouseOaklands Business ParkYateBristolBB37 5NA9.30 for 10amThursday 18 September 2003BPIF Midlands Business Centre,Alliance HouseAlum Rock RoadWard EndBirminghamB8 2NS9.30 for 10amPriceOnly £40 VAT BPIF members £60 VAT non-membersBook early to secure your place.

Slight recovery of output and orders falls short of expectations in Q4 - confidence concerns mount in 2024
22 February 2024
Performance in the UK's printing and printed packaging industry did improve in Q4, as far as output and orders are concerned. However, it didn't come close to what would historically be considered the seasonal norm, nor quite match the subdued expectations for Q4.
