Criminal liability
Two recent cases highlight the potential criminal liabilities of health and safety managers, supervisors and other employees. In the first case, an employee was killed by an electric shock, from a faulty plate warmer. The staff had reported the fault, but no action had been taken to correct the fault. The Health and Safety Manager, who had never been notified of the fault was fined £5,000 plus £3,000 costs because he had made events more likely by focussing more of his time on food hygiene rather than health and safety. In the second case, a site project manager was fined £750 under Section 7 of the HASAWA for failing to supervise the activities of two cleaning contractors whose activities caused a fire. The cleaning company has used large quantities of highly flammable paint thinners to clean the floor, which had ignited and caused two deaths. Primary liability was imposed on the cleaning company?s personnel but the project manager was also prosecuted for lack of supervision. The fines incurred by these individuals are not insurable and therefore have to be met by the individual or the company.

22 February 2024
Performance in the UK's printing and printed packaging industry did improve in Q4, as far as output and orders are concerned. However, it didn't come close to what would historically be considered the seasonal norm, nor quite match the subdued expectations for Q4.
