Clean water – Backflow prevention

Members are reminded that all water supply connections must comply with the requirements of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 to prevent any risk of contamination to any public or private water supply by back siphonage and in many cases basic non-return valves previously fitted when installing plate and film processors are now not acceptable. Should a contamination take place as a result of the wrong fittings or procedures being in place member companies could be liable to the total cost of repairs to the water supply system.Further useful information can be found at www.wras.co.uk who also can provide a free booklet ‘Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and Water Byelaws 2000, Scotland – Guidance Document relating to Schedule 1 Fluid Categories and Schedule 2 Requirements for Water Fittings.’Members can protect themselves from some prosecutions under these regulations by using water industry approved plumbers who have been trained in the relevant water regulations legislation. If your plumber is not registered why not encourage him/her to contact the Water Industry Approved Plumbers’ Scheme on (01495) 248 454. In some cases the local authority will supply the necessary self learning packages for a small fee and provide a free assessment days.
