Night Workers ? Increased Risk of Cancer

The Government of Denmark has become the first to accept the link between night shifts and cancer, by paying 40 women who developed the disease after working night shifts in state sector jobs. A United Nations health body has recently concluded that working nights probably increased the risk of cancer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which looked at studies of nurses, flight attendants and animals, has placed shift work in the same category as ultraviolet radiation, anabolic steroids and diesel engine exhausts in terms of cancer risk.

It is important therefore that companies monitor the health of employees involved in either permanent or rotational night work by offering medicals or as a minimum requiring night workers to complete a night shift questionnaire at regular intervals as required by the Working Times Regulations.
