Printed book sales increase

Waterstones have announced that sales of the Kindle e-book reader have decreased after seeing higher demand for the printed physical books. The UK's largest book retailing chain saw sales of physical books rise 5% in December 2014, at the expense of the popular e-reader.

New shared parental leave and pay requests on the way

Regulations came into force on 1 December 2014 for qualifying parents of babies born on or after 5 April 2015, and adoptive parents with the equivalent adoption date, to give more flexibility to parents in caring for their new child in the first year of its life.

Threat of retrospective VAT penalties for direct mail is averted

Previously, we warned that direct mail suppliers could face backdated VAT bills following HMRC's decision in April 2012 to strip bulk mail of its VAT-exempt status. This decision led many suppliers to charities and financial services businesses, which are unable to claim back or charge VAT, to use 'single sourcing' as a means of cutting out the VAT liability.

UK living wage increases

The living wage in the UK has been increased by 20p, and it now stands at £7.85 per hour for those outside London. The rate in London will rise from £8.80 to £9.15 per hour; an increase of 4%, as announced by Boris Johnson earlier this month.
