Ouput and orders exceeded expectation in Q4 - positive forecast for Q1 as some confidence returns

A better-than-expected seasonal boost in Q4 meant that both output and orders surpassed their Q4 forecasts – expectations for Q1 also remain positive. The latest Printing Outlook survey reveals that the majority of printers (56%) increased their output levels in the final quarter of 2015.

On 15 January 2016, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) opened registration for its forthcoming market engagement exercise on delivery of a nationwide census in 2021, and is inviting supplier organisations that may be interested in getting involved with the delivery of the census to sign-up to take part in the exercise and attend one of three Supplier Briefings being held in England and Wales.

The figures suggest that at this early stage of the calendar year, pay increase would be around the 2% mark for private sector manufacturing (including print), with the Retail Price Index (RPI) still currently at a low of 1.1% and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 0.1%.

Confidence hit in Q3 despite growth in output and orders - speedy recovery expected in Q4

Positive growth in the third quarter of the year ensured that output exactly matched the forecast provided in Q2; similarly the orders forecast was equally accurate, although here orders growth was lower in Q3 than in Q2. According to the latest Printing Outlook survey, more printers in Q3 were able to increase output (49% compared to 41% in Q2).
