Schneider Electric outline their solar power offerings

A number of UK Print service providers are now installing solar power technology to reduce costs and pursue sustainable energy strategies. Our energy partner, Schneider Electric, outlines their offering in this area.

Schneider manufacture a range of inverters (suited from small commercial through to large industrial roof systems and multi-MW solar farms) which convert the DC electricity to AC for consumption by the client, as well as associated products:

  • combiners to gather cables from the solar panels in to larger cables
  • distribution boards to connect the installation in to LV electricity infrastructure on site
  • transformers to step up the voltage for businesses with their own HV on site network
  • switchgear and relays to protect the system from power quality and fault issues, and to connect the supply to the grid
  • energy storage solutions for autonomy or continuity in the event of grid connection or supply problems
  • control and monitoring solutions to effectively manage the operation and performance monitoring of the solar installation

An overview of their solutions can be seen on their website, click here to view

Schneider introduce selected partners to do initial feasibility, electrical system design, installation and maintenance of the systems for our end user client enquiries using our equipment. They do not manufacture or sell solar PV modules (collectors / PV panels), and so are not limited to any particular brand or type module. Financial Solutions are not offered by Schneider Electric but there are a number of ways in which installers are offering to support the commercial / industrial end users to avoid / reduce capital outlay:

  • Roof lease / licence and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) - where the end client gives permission for the installation of solar on the roof, with little or no capital outlay, but a fixed term lease where the end client purchases the electricity produced at a preferential rate to that of their current energy supplier
  • Partial funding - as above but with the end client contributing some capital towards the project
  • Private wire or sleeved energy from a ground mounted solution (on / adjacent to client sites) - where the client does not have or wish to use roof space but the electricity is sold by PPA to the client.
Which one best suits the client can only be determined by the clients facilities, finance and energy management team. The PPA rates vary significantly based on a number of factors which are unique to each client and site, including solar irradiance in the area; costs of supporting infrastructure to enable the approval of energy to be exported from site, length of the agreement, size of the solar system possible / affordable for the client.

A Source of Independent Advice

Schneider have a range of installer partners that can offer different levels of support (technical and financial) including the leading national developer / installers, such as Lightsource and SolarCentury, as well as established regional installer partners such as Clean Earth Energy.

Take a look at the The Energy Managers' Forum (29th April, @ Bristol), which is part of the Large Scale Solar Conference, an important and informative event in the UK solar industry calendar, Schneider are sponsoring.
