27 January 2010

Michael Johnson goes ‘back to the floor’ for National Apprentice Week

As part of this year’s National Apprentice Week (1 - 5 February 2010), British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) Chief Executive, Michael Johnson is becoming an apprentice for one day. On Monday 1st February, Michael is swapping jobs with Christopher Head (pictured at work), who is currently an apprentice at Pepper Communications in Plymouth. In his naval days, Michael ran the Devonport Naval Base.

Michael will be heading to Plymouth to take on Christopher’s duties at Pepper Communications, working alongside the team that trains Christopher on a daily basis. This will include an introduction to bindery operations and running a Heidelberg Speedmaster 74 printing press.

Jake Whitford, Production Manager at Pepper Communications, commented, “We’re looking forward to welcoming Michael. We’ll keep him busy and try not to ‘press’ him too hard!”

In London, Christopher is taking on the responsibility of Chief Executive of the BPIF, one of Britain’s leading trade associations, for one day, which will include a meeting at the House of Commons. Christopher was Highly Commended by the judges at the BPIF PrintWeek Excellence Awards in 2009, in the Apprentice Award.

Michael Johnson said, “A well-trained, motivated workforce is vital for any business, and the BPIF is excited to be part of the National Apprenticeship Programme 2010. The day will be a great opportunity for me to meet bright, young individuals who are the future of the printing industry. Going back to Plymouth will be like going home.”
