The role of the Graphic Designer

  • Scanning pictures
  • Keying in text
  • Creating logos
  • Using the latest computer software

Requires:

  • Creativity and originality
  • Appreciation of good design
  • Computer skills
  • Good GCSE passes in Art, English, maths and computer studies
  • Through training, often at college or university

Press

The role of the Printer

  • Producing high quality work
  • Responsible for the overall quality of the print job
  • Setting up and running the printing press

Requires:

  • An ability to concentrate
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Good colour vision
  • Good GCSE passes in English, maths, Computer studies and
  • Science desirable
  • May involve studying at college as well as in-company training

Post Press

The role of the Print Finisher

  • Finishing printed items by turning them into a brochure, booklets, label or carton
  • Working on folding machines
  • Trimming sheets on a guillotine
  • Stapling and collating and packing finished jobs

Requires:

  • Good technical skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Appreciation of good quality
  • Good all round education
  • Teamwork
  • Skills training within the company and maybe at college

Production Management

The role of the Account Executive

  • As the main link with a company's customers, provides professional customer service
  • Ensures that jobs are produced and delivered on time
  • Talking, listening and liasing with customers and production staff by letter, email or face-to-face
  • Ensuring that details of jobs are correct

Requires:

  • Quick thinking and decision making
  • Good communications skills
  • Ability to write letters and spell
  • Flexibility
  • Ability to handle several jobs at once
  • Good qualifications in English, Maths and Business studies are idea

The role of the Sales Executive

  • Selling print with a professional carefully researched and planned approach to take account of customers' individuality
  • Seek out and develop new customers
  • Maintain and improve business from existing customers
  • Keep records of customers and provide sales reports

  • A sound understanding of a customer's business

The role of the Managing Director
