BPIF responds to Insolvency Service consultation on strengthening the regulatory framework and fee structure for Insolvency Practitioners

On 21 March the BPIF responded to an Insolvency Service consultation paper on strengthening the regulatory framework and fee structure for Insolvency Practitioners (IPs). Welcoming the proposed reforms set out in the paper, the BPIF expresses support for the Government's aim of assisting creditors in insolvency situations by simplifying the fee structure to align the interests of IPs more closely to those of creditors, which it believes should increase returns to the latter. It also stresses that the proposed reforms are essential to restoring public confidence in the handling of insolvencies and in helping to ensure that the profession delivers the best possible outcomes for creditors.

This year's Budget is a good one for manufacturers. Together with other leading trade associations, we argued the case for reducing the rising cost of energy and the Chancellor has responded with a £7bn support package. We have also stressed the need to strengthen the competiveness of UK businesses and this too has been recognised, with other measures announced to boost investment, exports and skills.

It is clear apprenticeship programmes work and provide a viable route to a successful career. They also benefit businesses; 96% of employers that take on an apprentice report benefits to their business. Offering apprenticeships can provide a business with a pipeline of fresh recruits and can ensure that skills and experiences are passed on through your workforce, from experienced employees to the younger generation.

This project that was instigated by BPIF labels and PRISMM Environmental back in April 2013 is now gathering momentum. The project, designed to reduce the amount of production waste going to landfill by diverting this waste to energy recovery, is now showing signs of success.

This year BPIF Members' Day took on a new format with the morning comprising of a workshop for all learners on the Level 5 Graduate Management Programme. This programme has been one of the year's successes for the BPIF. As one of only 30 schemes to achieve employer-led funding it has allowed the BPIF to train 250 employees in the printing industry to degree level.

The event which was supported by the major suppliers to the self adhesive label industry addressed some of the issues relating to the continuing development of flexographic machinery, improvements to repro with the introduction of spotless repro, the effects that incorrect use of anilox rolls can have on quality, the problem of ink migration as well some of the other issues affecting the industry. The technical seminar was brought to a close by Mike Fairley who gave a very detailed review of the industry and some of the developments in worldwide markets. The BPIF launched its Graduate Management Programme for professionals in print and media on the 30 of April at The Tower - A Guoman Hotel in London. 160 learners attended the day event which was deemed a success by all. Ellis Watson, CEO of DC Thomson & Co Ltd and motivational speaker, urged all learners to be 'just that bit better and enthusiastic, dynamic and candid in the workplace'. Learners were introduced to their mentors and the programme was explained in detail.

The speaker programme and list of exhibitors has attracted the attention of Teresa Presas, director general of CEPI, the Confederation of European Paper Industries, in Brussels. She will attend MMP to investigate the reality of integrated media at the show.

On 6th February BPIF labels held their AGM at the offices of CPI (Centre for Process Innovation Limited) in Sedgefield. In total 20 label converters and suppliers attended. At the AGM Chairman John Bambery informed those present of the achievements that have been made over the past 12 months. We have held 2 well supported technical seminars and published a definitive Good Manufacturing Guide for the printing of labels and related packaging for the food, drinks and sensitive products sectors. This guide sought to address the issues surrounding ink migration. For the coming year there will be 2 technical seminars which will be incorporated with the 2 annual golf days.

Now the first certification body has gained UKAS accreditation for the BPIF ISO12647-2 Colour Management Scheme, 40% of surveyed* printing companies are planning to implement the scheme in the next 12 months.
