Sales training across the print industry has been a long-term problem.  The cost of training coupled with the time spent out of the office has meant that sales training has always been challenging for the industry. Yet sales training is critical if our sector is to grow and succeed.

BPIF Printing Outlook Survey shows better than expected start to 2011 but weaker second quarter in prospect

The printing industry was in better shape than envisaged during the first quarter of this year but there are signs that market may be slowing, according to the BPIF’s Printing Outlook Survey published this week. The latest industry trading trends survey report covers the first quarter of 2011, ending 31 March. The survey was carried out online during the period during the period 1-15 April 2011, and consists of 102 companies employing 8,752 people with a turnover greater than £1 billion.

New Business-Friendly Competition Proposals Announced

21 March 2011

A single competition authority to boost growth and streamline processes for business will be set up under proposals to improve the UK's competition regime, Business Minister Edward Davey announced today.A Competition Regime for Growth: a consultation on options for reform' sets out proposals to create a single Competition and Markets Authority by merging the competition functions of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) with the Competition Commission (CC). The UK already has a globally regarded competition system but Ministers are determined to make sure that it supports growth while simplifying the existing system for business.

Important changes to Corporation Tax (CT) filing and payment to come into effect next month

14 March 2011

From April 2011, all Corporation Tax payments will have to be made electronically, and all company tax returns must be filed online for accounting periods ending after 31 March 2010. The returns will also have to be filed using a specified data format, known as Inline XBRL or iXBRL.

We have written to the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) urging the UK Government to vote against the introduction of any anti-dumping or anti-subsidy measures in relation to Chinese imports of coated fine paper (CFP) into the European Union.

Postcomm consults on the removal of bulk mail from the universal service

14 March 2011

Postcomm has published the first in a series of documents which set out initial views on the building blocks for a new and sustainable regulatory framework for 2012 and beyond. They launched a consultation on 1 March to seek views on whether bulk mail should be removed from the universal service and how Royal Mail's licence should be clarified in relation to the existing composition of the universal service. Postcomm is not otherwise conducting a fundamental review of the universal service. This consultation, and the supporting papers published alongside, are aimed at facilitating discussion and resolution of some key issues prior to the anticipated handover of regulatory responsibility to Ofcom later this year.

BPIF joins forces with marketing and advertising trade bodies to press for VAT clarification for direct mail

Trade bodies representing the printing, marketing and advertising sectors have come together to make a joint submission to HM Revenue & Customs to clarify the VAT position for companies supplying printed matter for marketing purposes, such as direct mail and mail inserts.

The British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) has announced that it is to launch the Excellence Awards in 2011, encompassing a range of 14 best performance in Industry Awards. It will be celebrated at a black-tie event at the Café de Paris in London. The Café de Paris is referred to by Forbidden London as "The Coolest Club in London", the perfect venue to launch the awards.

BPIF announces appointment of Yolanda Noble as first female board member

The BPIF is delighted to announce that it has appointed Yolanda Noble to its board of directors, with Yolanda attaining the unique position of becoming the BPIF's first female non-executive board member.

Yolanda is currently Executive Vice President with Innovative Output Solutions (IOS), one of the world's largest colour digital bureaus, which focuses on delivering market leading communication solutions for its wide customer base. IOS is now the largest direct communications manufacturer within its sector in the UK, with over 1,300 employees and an annual turnover in excess of £130m. IOS provides a wide range of services from a number of sites throughout the country.

Printing Outlook cites autumn improvement but poorer prospects ahead

Print benefited from a further expansion in trade during the autumn but trade is expected to weaken during the winter period, according to the latest Printing Outlook report published by the BPIF today (14 January). The latest industry trading trends survey results cover the three month period ending 30 November. It was carried out online during the period 1-17 December 2010, and consists of 98 companies employing 11,917 people with a turnover of £1.3 billion.
