BPIF PRINTNG OUTLOOK SURVEY RESULTS INDICATE SLOW START TO 2012

Printers saw some measure of improvement in trade in the final quarter of last year with both demand and output rising on balance, according to the latest BPIF Printing Outlook survey results covering the three-month period from October to December 2011.This positive result is qualified by the survey’s finding that both indicators remain below the levels previously forecast.

Eclipse Colour and AJS Labels celebrated their success as BPIF Company of the Year 2011 winners at the BPIF Excellence Awards last night (15 June). As winners of the over £5m turnover and up to £5m turnover categories respectively, the two companies received their trophies at a spectacular awards ceremony held in the stunning and exotic surroundings of London’s Café de Paris, where guests were entertained by author and comedian Mark Steel, the brilliant celtic/rock band Bags of Rock, and the legendary burlesque dancers for which the venue is famous.

BPIF Printing Outlook Survey shows better than expected start to 2011 but weaker second quarter in prospect

The printing industry was in better shape than envisaged during the first quarter of this year but there are signs that market may be slowing, according to the BPIF’s Printing Outlook Survey published this week. The latest industry trading trends survey report covers the first quarter of 2011, ending 31 March. The survey was carried out online during the period during the period 1-15 April 2011, and consists of 102 companies employing 8,752 people with a turnover greater than £1 billion.

New Business-Friendly Competition Proposals Announced

21 March 2011

A single competition authority to boost growth and streamline processes for business will be set up under proposals to improve the UK's competition regime, Business Minister Edward Davey announced today.A Competition Regime for Growth: a consultation on options for reform' sets out proposals to create a single Competition and Markets Authority by merging the competition functions of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) with the Competition Commission (CC). The UK already has a globally regarded competition system but Ministers are determined to make sure that it supports growth while simplifying the existing system for business.

Important changes to Corporation Tax (CT) filing and payment to come into effect next month

From April 2011, all Corporation Tax payments will have to be made electronically, and all company tax returns must be filed online for accounting periods ending after 31 March 2010. The returns will also have to be filed using a specified data format, known as Inline XBRL or iXBRL.

Postcomm consults on the removal of bulk mail from the universal service

14 March 2011

Postcomm has published the first in a series of documents which set out initial views on the building blocks for a new and sustainable regulatory framework for 2012 and beyond. They launched a consultation on 1 March to seek views on whether bulk mail should be removed from the universal service and how Royal Mail's licence should be clarified in relation to the existing composition of the universal service. Postcomm is not otherwise conducting a fundamental review of the universal service. This consultation, and the supporting papers published alongside, are aimed at facilitating discussion and resolution of some key issues prior to the anticipated handover of regulatory responsibility to Ofcom later this year.
